WHAT TO EXPECT

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

If you are experiencing an emergency with your pet, one of the most important things to do is to stay calm.  Animals are keenly aware of duress in their owners; your relaxed behavior will help to soothe them.

AECC is open from 6 PM to 8 AM, Monday through Thursday, and from 6 PM Friday until 8 AM Monday.  We are also open 24 hours on all major holidays.  Outside of these hours, please call your regular veterinarian for further instruction.  Otherwise, call AECC and one of our experienced technicians will be able to guide you.

Depending on the nature of the emergency, it may be possible to recommend some basic care over the phone.  More often than not, however, it is necessary for your pet to be evaluated by one of our doctors to determine the best treatment plan.  Do not initiate any treatment at home unless it is under the recommendation of a veterinarian!

UPON ARRIVAL

As you check in, a technician will evaluate (triage) your pet immediately and every attempt will be made to allow you to see the doctor as quickly as possible.  You can hasten this process by downloading and filling out our admission form in advance.

Be aware that patients in the most critical condition will always be treated first, and that this may result in a delay to you.  Rest assured that when your pet is examined, it will receive the full attention and care that it needs.  Please be patient in the event of delays.  Direct any questions you may have at this time to our experienced technical staff.

ADMISSION

When you meet with the doctor, a detailed history will be taken prior to your pet’s physical exam.  Following the examination, the doctor will outline the treatment recommendations and discuss any questions you may have.  Depending on the nature of your pet’s emergency, it may be possible in complete testing and treatment while you wait.  In other cases, hospitalization may be warranted.

You will be presented with an itemized estimate of the cost of care after your discussion with the doctor.  A deposit is required prior to initiation of treatment and full payment is due at the time services are completed.  Payment options include Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Care Credit, check, and cash.  Checks are processed as immediate electronic debits by the Telecheck system.

HOSPITALIZATION AND DISCHARGE

A veterinarian is on staff at all times that the hospital is open.  Visiting your hospitalized pet is both welcome and encouraged, but may be limited at times depending on caseload.  The doctor will update you regularly during your pet’s stay but you are also free to call any time for a quick update from a technician.

AECC closes promptly at 8 AM on weekdays.  All hospitalized pets must be discharged by this time.  In the event that further care is needed, you will be directed to transfer your pet to your regular veterinarian at that time.   A complete copy of the record will be faxed to your vet and a copy can be furnished for you as well upon request.  Our doctor will also contact your veterinarian to ensure the transfer is completed as smoothly as possible.
